With a compatible mix of a dreamy melody and RnB rhythm, Odunsi (The Engine) perfectly aligns the two in his new glittery video ‘Star Signs’ from his 2018 album ‘Rare.’
Odunsi is a 23 year old eclectic artist from Nigeria and fuses RnB and an African beat within his music. Following the success from his track ‘Tipsy’ featuring RAYE which was released this year, Odunsi came through with a brand new sparkly video oozing with his Yoruba roots and merging nostalgic 80s and 90s aesthetics alongside it. Shot in Lagos, the video exhibits the glitz and glam of a reminiscent Yoruba party scene that he says he would have been a part of as a child.
Styled by Daniel Obasi, the attendees of the party wear traditional clothing, all colour coordinated with their star sign. Later on, the party goers unite and dance together to the astral sounding beat. The music video was by Sorry We Don’t Have Candles - a collection of young filmmakers consisting of Ademola Falomo, Santi, TSE, Chukwuka Nwobi and SAN.
“With the star signs video I wanted to express my love for Nigerian (Specifically Yoruba) party culture. We love to dress up and do the most and also shows the live music being played at these parties, money being sprayed and people dancing. I reference the character of King Sunny Ade (KSA) in the video. He inspired the style of the outfit I wore created by Daniel Obasi and designed by Roosevelt Amase”.
Odunsi’s rapid growth in Africa through the release of the track ‘In The Morning’ under Universal Music Nigeria placed him on the map but it was the independently released album Rare. that made him blossom and perch himself in the #1 spot in Nigeria. Since his breakthrough, he has been noticed internationally with the likes of The Fader, MTV, Dazed and The Financial Times.
Odunsi (The Engine) recently played his debut UK tour and played a sold out show at The Garage in London.
