Ultimate Hat Guide: How To Find The Right Hat For You

Celebrities and influencers make adding a hat as a punchy or whimsical accessory look easy, but it can be hard when you are trying to replicate that effortless style.

Finding a hat that suits you can be challenging. Once you find that hat, however, you will find that it helps to elevate your look and give you a sense of being organised and put together. Here are some tips for you to consider before you go out and buy a new hat.

Consider your face shape

Everyone has a different face shape and this will influence the type of hat that will suit you best. Take some time in the mirror to identify your face shape.

People with oblong or rectangular faces are typically longer than they are wide with their forehead, cheeks and jaw looking like they are the same width. This is a very versatile face shape, but you will need larger hats with wider brims to balance you out. Consider picking up a wide-brimmed cowboy hat or sunhat.

Round faces tend to have fuller features. To balance this out, higher or angular hats are for you. You could choose a fedora-style or maybe a boater hat for the summer months.

Those with wide cheekbones combined with a narrower forehead and chin have diamond faces. Hats with broad rims and shallow crowns will dial down the sharpness of your features. A knitted beanie worn on the back of your head is also a great choice.

What is your style?

Once you have figured out which type of hat suits your face, you will need to look at your overall style. Getting it wrong can make you stand out in the wrong way.

If you have a more casual or sporty look, then a baseball cap is an obvious winner for you. Summer can lead you to be more casual so a straw hat is perfect, or more dressed up so you would need a Panama hat.

Bucket hats are always a winner when it comes to a relaxed or casual style. You can get them in so many different designs and colours, making them a great way to showcase your personality.

Hairstyle

Hair can make all the difference when it comes to wearing a hat. If you are blessed with curly hair, then you want to avoid flattening your hair. Visors or wide-brimmed hats are perfect for keeping the bounce in your locks.

For those who have shorter hair think about keeping your head warm where your hair may not. In the winter, beanies are a classic choice. In the warmer months you will want to keep the sun off your head, so pick up a bucket hat.

Colour scheme and skin tone

Fashion in general should fit you rather than the other way round. Knowing what colours complement your skin tone is key. The same goes for hat colours and designs.

Take time to identify your skin’s undertone. It will be either cool, neutral or warm. Then wear a colour that complements that tone for the best look.

You will also need to decide whether you want your hat’s colour to be the statement colour in your outfit or not. The alternative is to keep it neutral or to match it with aspects throughout your outfit. For example, matching a fascinator to a flower colour on a floral formal dress.
