Taiwan-based R&B singer SherryZ Releases Debut Album Time

Taiwan-based alt-R&B singer-songwriter SherryZ releases her highly anticipated debut album, Time. The 12-track album is a deeply personal exploration of her struggles and triumphs, recorded with renowned producers Yuchain Wang (Sunset Rollercoaster, Yoga Lin) and J-Jyun Ciou (Elephant Gym, Enno Cheng). The project is a testament to resilience, marking her emergence from a tumultuous period in her life.

SherryZ’s path to Time was fraught with challenges. Following her success on the talent show Chinese Million Star and an independently released EP, she signed a restrictive 360 deal with a mainstream label. Over the next four years, her creativity was stifled as the label shelved her music and withheld support. To sustain herself, she worked secretly as an accountant, all the while doubting her career choice and distancing herself from others.

A turning point came when a family member helped her secure a residency at a hotel bar. This rekindled her passion for music, setting her on a path to rebuild her confidence and develop her sound. Reflecting on the experience, SherryZ poured her emotions into the creation of Time, a sonic diary of healing and rediscovery. Musically, Time showcases SherryZ’s love for classic R&B and soul, while incorporating experimental electronic elements, thanks to the creative vision of Golden Melody-nominated producer Chunho. The album opens with the titular track Time, inspired by a trip to the Grand Canyon. Its quiet storm balladry captures a raw, emotional prologue to her journey.

Tracks like 'Gross' and 'Cola Man' blend retro soul influences with contemporary textures, offering sharp commentary on human flaws and deceptive personas. Meanwhile, 'Love on Hold' nods to Erykah Badu’s iconic 'On & On,' reinterpreting neo-soul with a darker, faster tempo. SherryZ also reflects on her personal growth in 'Stay Who You Are' and 'I Hear the Call,' which celebrate individuality and resilience. The album closes with 'Once Again,' an emotional pop ballad described as a beacon of hope and the light at the end of the tunnel. With Time, SherryZ has crafted a deeply moving record that encapsulates her journey from despair to self-discovery.
