*SYSTEMIC: The Brighter Side of Gorp-Core

With almost 100,000 Instagram followers and artists such as Lil Yachty and Don Toliver supporting the brand it has been a big two years for founders Jason and Tuhan.

Despite a strong social media presence information on the brand, *Systemic, is surprisingly scarce, with little material in wider fashion media networks and no interviews to give insight into the brands inner workings and identity.

In spite of this, the name *Systemic itself could connect to themes around the brand’s individuality.

Systemic psychotherapy focuses on all aspects of a persons lived experiences; their relationships and interactions with all groups around them. You can see in the brand that they are drawing on the systems we belong to when producing their pieces, incorporating different contemporary trends, understanding the varied nature of people’s lives and creating garments that can clothe individuals in their diverse systems and groups.

Inspired by their mothers, it is clear that their own relational systems have influenced them to create this exciting and distinctive label.

Founded in 2021, the brands initial focus appeared to be on stylish outdoors wear, with bright and vibrant designs, *Systemic can’t help but stand out.

They brought a fun and playful side to the often-dreary world of gorp-core, swapping the customary dull greys, greens and blacks for bursts of bright primary colours.

Their most recent collection, released on the 23rd June 2023, showed exciting evolution. They moved away from their comfort zone of cargo trousers and fleeces, creating a collection full of statement streetwear pieces with plenty of baggy faded denim, colourful football shirts and graphic tees, while maintaining their outdoorsy staples.

The early work from the brand felt very locked into a specific style. The gorp-core inspiration was evident and at the heart of their early collections. The designs were very uniform, and the looks mainly consisted of different coloured cargo trousers, fleeces, hoodies and ski masks.

The new collection’s variation and more subtle branding has allowed the label to transcend styles and trends, creating pieces that can be incorporated into any outfit, for any occasion. Despite this shift, the designs have preserved the bright and bold colour palettes that made *Systemic stand out, evolving the brand’s design direction while maintaining their exuberant identity.

Seeing what they have been able to achieve in just two years, I am sure I am not alone in waiting with bated breath to see what Jason and Tuhan can achieve and create with *Systemic in the future.
