SuperJazzClub and their latest EP MONOCHROME RADIO is a breath of fresh air as it artfully explores the intersection of genres through sensuous expression that reflects the variety and diversity of the diaspora.
The result is a timeless fusion project that is hard to hold and examine but easy to feel. The 5-track project is familiar, but excitingly new as the interdisciplinary Ghanaian collective creates space for us to exist in.
Pushing the boundaries, we are invited into a sonic world that is a homage to radio. Meaning, its best radio is in translation of feeling and an introduction to new musical experiences and sounds. When you listen to the radio you want to be caught by surprise.
Speaking on what the new EP represents at this stage in their career, SuperJazzClub said: “This is a step into the major league. The rookie seasons are over.”
Opening with the vibrant ‘OFF’ we are transported by warm piano keys and slick percussion that immediately switch you off from the outside world. Distinct sweet R&B vocals are languid but probing as the vocalist visits the possibility of re-sparking an old situation with an old flame.
We lean more into electronic rhythm stylings on ‘LOOSE’ that adopt Afro-centric inflexions. Several different voices lend their personalities weave into this, each sharing their interpretation of love with heartfelt lyrism “High and up, taking off over me/ oh your love, what a drug I’m a gooner.”
‘911’ is an experimentation with an unorthodox yet groovy production as dub, reggae, hip-hop, soul and new wave blur together. Foreboding, there is the sense that danger is right around the corner, as we wait and anticipate it.
They tap into the sound of dancehall on ‘UNO’ featuring British artist-producer BenjiFlow. Creating the mood of an underground basement party this one is the perfect for the raves.
Speaking on the collaborative process, SuperJazzClub said: “It was a beautiful and seamless moment working with Benji. Øbed pulled out a pack of beats at the session and that beat happened to be the last one we played and he instantly connected with it. The energy in the studio was full blast from then on. It’s a song inspired by the things we love to talk about like life, God, relationships and money”.
The Accra natives revert fluidly back to the 2YK R&B feel with the last track of the five-part project ‘FADED’, a relatable moment when you catch the eye of someone across the dancefloor. There is no playing small, or shy, rather embracing the feeling of urgency you make a move.
Already performing at festivals like Cross The Tracks Festival and Recess’ Dreamland Margate Weekender. On top of that, a highlight for the collective was a performance at the famous Montreux Jazz Festival.
They are also starting their European headline tour in October which will see the collective play London’s Colours Hoxton on October 10th, as well as Berlin, Amsterdam, Brussels and Paris.
