Returning with her latest ode, on ‘Passenger Princess’ Shaé Universe creates a space for bittersweet feelings of nostalgic fondness as she reminisces on an ex. Familiarity and affection, are however clouded by her ex’s past dishonesty and other recurring issues.
The timeless track is produced by TSB, the minimalistic beat has a gentle acoustic guitar that is softly played in the background backed by percussion instruments and inviting synths that create an air of vulnerability that Shaé leans into. Allowing Shaé’s emotive lyricism to be expressive and rich in tone, immersing us in what she’s feeling with delicate care and intimacy that stirs something deep and powerful.
Speaking on the new single, Shaé said “Passenger Princess was birthed from bittersweet feelings about my ex at the time. He’d sent me roses from LA and I still wasn’t over everything we’d been through when I received them so I put all my mixed emotions into this song.
I think Passenger Princess is a very special song because not only is the title current and relatable, but the song’s deeper message of not always knowing exactly how to navigate situations is part of being a human with feelings. A part that sometimes frustrates us but hopefully, through this song, people feel seen and confident enough to accept this grey area of life.”
Used to her soulful, experimental sound since her 2018 single 'No Stallin' it’s always good to see the Londoner further push herself to create her soundscapes to thrive in and stories to tell.
We enjoyed listening to her debut 7 track EP Unorthodox, which is a unique R&Drill-fusion project that left listeners in awe. Now, with a new release, we cannot hear to see what other new music is in store.
