Turning the heads of both R&B and dance music fans alike, Shay Lia’s new single ‘UPSIDE DOWN’ exudes ethereal groove and feel-good melodies that beckon listeners toward the dancefloor.
Her effervescent sound and succinct R&B vocals unify her genre-defying songs, creating a feel-good, end-of-summer jam for fans.
What makes Shay Lia unique is her refusal to conform to one specific genre, having previously flirted with reggae-jazz on the record ‘SOLO’, and showed versatility on dance-heavy ‘TAKUTA’.
Even though this single might be a departure from previous songs, ‘UPSIDE DOWN’ stands out through its uplifting, groovy melodies: it almost feels like it could be in the Barbie movie.
Sometimes recognised as the girl dancing enthusiastically in the background of KAYTRANADA’s infamous 2013 Boiler Room set, fans of his will know that she has captivated listeners with her vocals on ‘Leave Me Alone’ and ‘CHANCES’.
Shay Lia certainly isn’t afraid to work with artists of many different genres, having appeared on songs with BadBadNotGood and Kojey Radical.
On her album FACETS, due to be released in October, Shay Lia describes her artistic restlessness:
‘It’s impossible for me to sit comfortably in one specific genre because while my vision is clear, my influences and experiences are layered… it’s an intentional demonstration of all sides of me and I can’t wait for everyone to hear it, feel it and see parts of themselves in it.”
Following the accolades from her previous album Dangerous (2019) including a Polaris Prize nomination, the Montreal-based artist’s upcoming album FACETS will certainly be one to watch.
Shay Lia’s album ‘FACETS’ is due to be released on 20th October.
