Last week ahead of Shaé Universe’s sold-out show at Omeara, we were kindly invited to the intimate London Bridge venue, where fans witnessed an outstanding night of music, good vibes and some very special guests in attendance.
To kick off the night, DJ Pedro who is well known for being an eclectic selector, producer and model, took to the stage to warm up the crowd, with some of the hottest afro-beats and alternative sounds from around the world, his selection pretty much set the tone for the night.
Once 9pm hit we were welcomed into Shaé’s Universe, where the Nigerian born musician showcased her duality as an artist, performing a variety of old and new tracks, alongside a beautiful live band. Well known for coining the term R’n’Drill, where Shaé regularly combines R’nB and Drill on her tracks, she began the night by performing an R’n’B medley with songs like Triggered by Jhene Aiko as well as some old school classics like Ready or Not, Gangsta Lovin, The Boy is Mine and so many more. Shaé clearly knows her fans well, as the crowd sang in unison to some of her favourite songs.
Now to the main event, where fans were encapsulated by Shaé’s beauty and aura, and of course her performance as she sang an abundance of gems; including Melanin, Meant to Be, No Stallin and Misunderstood. Melanin was a standout performance as the crowd proudly and simultaneously sang together, Shaé was also accompanied by her niece who sat on her lap, while Shaé affirmed the lyrics to her, ‘Dark Skin, light skin, caramel or brown, all of those complexions, beautiful reflections, all those different flavours, it’s amazing’, the whole performance was such a beautiful thing to witness.
However, Shaé Universe didn’t just perform her earlier music, she brought the crowd forward to the current day with a variety of tracks from her debut EP Unorthodox, fans were surprised by special guest Kadeem Tyrell and Tay Iwar for tracks Shine and Let Me Know, Although neither artist were in attendance, their presence was truly felt as Shaé performed tracks Royalty featuring Kojey Radical and Sit Back featuring Enny during her set.
Between the emotional dedications to her close family and friends (who were in the crowd) to Shaé bringing herself to tears, the night had to come to an end one way or another. Along with her musical talents, Shaé Universe is well known for merging her religion and spirituality into her music, fans were able to witness this during her performance of 111, which are angel numbers very close to her heart. To the close the show, was the track everyone was waiting for, this track is the one that gave Shaé the wider recognition she so rightfully deserves, that track is You Lose which samples the Garage classic Sorry by Monsta Boy, the beat is addictive and lyrics are highly relatable, it’s no wonder the crowd knew the lyrics word for word.
If you haven’t already, listen to Unorthodox and check out Shaé Universe here!
