South London singer/songwriter Samm Henshaw released his 16-track EP Untidy Soul today, a long awaited project that had fans across the globe eagerly waiting for its debut. With features from Tobe Nwigwe, Maverick Sabre and Keyon Harrold, Untidy Soul is a blues and jazz-filled project brimming with character and a rich production style.
Untidy Soul has slowly been teased and had been unfolding over the past year or so with releases 'Grow', Thoughts & Prayers', 'Chicken Wings' and 'Still Broke' as well as a remix of 'Chicken Wings' featuring Alabama born and Chicago raised rapper Mick Jenkins. His visuals also sit alongside his music portraying a television-style series showcasing Samm's satirical humour as he plays the character Sonny, inspired by Childish Gambino's Atlanta. Also in the run up to his release, Samm also performed tracks of the album at The Roots festive picnic and appeared on The Late Show with James Corden.
Speaking on Untidy Soul, Samm said: “These songs all tell very different stories, but the overall theme for me is self-growth. You see the main character start in one place at the beginning and get to another place by the end, and hopefully that inspires people to have some reflection on their own lives—how they treat others, how they treat
themselves. Because I think most of us are a bit of a mess on the inside. We’re all a work in progress." With the new project exploring themes of love, loss and connection, Untidy Soul delves deep into story-telling as well as introspectiveness that are fresh and delicately written.
