Taking place in St. John’s Church, Hyde Park - Rocky Star mystified with shimmering garments, nostalgic patterns, head scarves and accessories all nodding to inspirations which originate from the 1950s. The venue has a unique choral tradition, hosting contemporary jazz mass alongside traditional services. It’s noteworthy as an inclusive and diverse space. Presenting as the perfect host space for Rocky Star’s dynamic and eclectic works. Its gothic revival architecture paired well with the garments and bass-heavy 1950s tunes that encapsulated the collection and captivated the audience.
A designer dedicated to making women feel seen and special, the pairings we saw float down the runway would do just that. Sequin adornments shone under spotlights similar in effect to a mirrorball. Gold statement jewellery added to the shimmering looks, whilst glitter headbands and scarves were adorned by bow detail. Tiered skirts and fitted bishop sleeves also made their appearance throughout. Muted floral patterns proved reminiscent of your most prized vintage find at a mysterious widow’s estate sale. Refined glamour complemented playful detail and altogether congealed into a youthful, yet sophisticated take on the 1950s inspiration.
Attendees patiently waited at the entrance as they lined up nearly an hour in advance of the show. As we took our seats and lights began to shift, the chattering venue flashed open as the press pit awaited their first camera clicks. Heavy bass over jovial singing engulfed the venue initially for a few moments on, before the models began appearing. There was a near-ominous anticipation that conjoined with the intensity of the music. The first model appeared, amidst the drama of smoke machines - glittering, pink and floral. It was right then, that I knew we were in for a treat.
I had the chance to interview Rocky Star for a couple of moments after the show, adding to the depth of the event’s enjoyment. We gathered a fuller image of the vision and just how these garments are designed to affect their wearer.
When guests enter your world, what do you want them to experience?
Well, if they’re entering my world - I’m definitely taking them somewhere.
The Rocky Star brand is about many elements. It’s eclectic, it’s for a woman who is spiritual in her own way.
This season, she’s woken up in the Spring. At the time it’s 1950. She’s very flirty, she’s romantic, she’s feeling the love. I like to take people to a certain time period with my work. I love the old times.
I really like you paired nostalgic music with the looks…
I like to present the entire collection aligned with the mood of the music.
The bass fully engulfed the venue… you become immersed in it.
Yes. In the beginning you think “what the hell is happening”, but then it grows on you.
When it comes to your journey, I think it’s important to ask designers what they would tell the younger version of themselves. What would you say?
I’ve been in the industry for thirty years now and I’m still learning a lot. I think one thing that’s remained consistent is the patience I’ve had. I’m also particular about timing. These two things are very important.
I’d say - hold onto your style, your personality. That’s the only way you’ll be different from the rest. Stay true to yourself.
If someone’s wearing Rocky Star, how do you hope it’ll make them feel?
It's about a woman who wants to feel special.
If she can feel special in the garments - then my work is done.
Established in 1995, Rocky Star is unafraid to bend in alignment with shifting tides of the industry, whilst maintaining their personal style. Something that this brand does well is imbue passion into each article of clothing and remain true to their focus of luxury couture. Glamour is incorporated in a way that allows every day men and women to include it into their daily wardrobe.
Rocky Star wants you to feel special, and how could you not whilst decorated in glitter and luxe fabrics? I imagine these garments ornamenting the likes of celebrities as they strut down red carpets, just as easily as they could intermix in time for your next romanticised coffee date. Who knows - maybe you’ll turn up to an estate sale serving g l a m o u r, whilst you dig through unknown treasure.
More than likely, you’ll find the garments make you feel like a treasure, too.
