An account of young love going wrong, 'me & me' is where Southampton-born, London-based Singer Reuben Aziz explores unrequited love on his latest single featuring BackRoad Gee.
Melancholic, bittersweet, and sharp, Aziz, laments,“she was never yours just your turn” , encapsulating the loss felt, and also the attempt to disguise the vulnerability by creating an emotional distance to ward off the hurt.
The themes of heartbreak, love and hurt are familiar to us, as Aziz takes a personal creative risk within the production, a slower, more measured and sparse instrumentation that fits the mood of the track. The 21-year-old worked with Nathan, a producer who has recently worked on Central Cee x Nemzzz’s ‘DILEMMA'.
Sonically, it leans into the deep R&B and emotional feels that we now heavily associate with Aziz. Backroad Gee’s added verse is combative, explores the potential us vs them mentality we was looking for, before ultimately deciding to focus on himself.
“The lyrics and sonic felt timeless from when I first began working on the song in 2024” Aziz said. “I decided to push the sound forward and now it feels like a nice middle ground between R&B and Rap.
“To finish the track, we felt like we needed a Rap verse, Backroad loved the song and the rest is history. As soon as he laid the verse, I knew the track was one that we needed to put out.”
