The internationally revered Afrobeats artist Rema returns with his five-track EP Ravage. Marking the start of a new chapter for the Benin City star, the EP represents a shift from his Rave & Roses era into a new phase of positive energy, passion and priorities.
Opening with the EP with 'Trouble Maker', Rema explores his experience facing constant criticism within the music industry throughout his career. He refuses any labels placed on him and takes ownership of his own rebellious and unique place within the industry as an artist, labelling himself ‘the trouble maker’. The second song ‘DND’ has a steady amapiano beat, laced with Rema’s lyrics about sitting in silence and protecting himself from any negative energy around him.
There’s an ongoing theme of creative metamorphosis in ‘Smooth Criminal’ in which the artist celebrates how he continues to reinvent himself and innovate his unique sound. ‘Don’t Leave’ explores a relationship in which the girl wants his attention whereas Rema is being pulled in another direction and prioritises his career over his relationships. My personal favourite is the final song, ‘Red Potion’. The wonderful Afrobeats production compliments the enchanting tone of the song, with the lyrics discussing a toxic spell, a game played by two lovers.
The ‘Ravage’ EP, curated by producers London, Blaise Beatz and P Prime, prefaces his EU and UK tour which will be concluded by a performance at the O2, London on 14th November. The success of Rema cannot be denied as he becomes a record-breaking machine. Not only is he the first African artist to hit one billion streams on Spotify, he recently won a VMA for best Afrobeats song for hit ‘Calm Down’ this year.
The young artist continues to pave the way as one of the most successful Afrobeats artists to come out of Nigeria, and at the young age of 23 he shows no signs of slowing down.
