Ravyn Lenae Continues To Carve Space For Herself In R&B With Sophomore Album Bird's Eye

Chicago's own cult favourite, Ravyn Lenae, returns with her sophomore album, Bird's Eye. Her much-anticipated debut, Hypnos, captivated listeners with an eclectic R&B sound that was both unique and familiar. Bird’s Eye not only meets these expectations but exceeds them, offering a confident and masterful fusion of genres, delivered via Lenae’s ever-present soft soprano, the album makes for effortless listening.

The album comes off the back of the release of single ‘One wish’ with none other than Childish Gambino, a vulnerable offering exploring Lenae’s complex relationship with her father. Following this release, Lenae graces us with 35 minutes of delicate R&B over the span of 11 tracks, made in collaboration with her executive producer Dahi best known for his work with rap giant Kendrick Lamar, Lenae delivers an intimate yet self assured body of work.

The album opens with ‘Genius’, an almost soft rock starter setting the tone for the rest of the project, an exploration into the often repetitive nature of our most complicated relationships, a theme explored in ‘One Wish’ as previously mentioned as well as ‘Love me not’ as the title suggests. Meanwhile ‘Dream Girl’ offers a slightly different approach, documenting themes of lust and desire, a confident, authoritative contribution among some of the moodier themes and is followed by ‘Candy’, similar in content, bouncy and celebratory.

The penultimate track ‘Pilot’ soundtracks the perpetually perplexing 20 somethings; ‘Just know I’m 24, small to the world I’m in’ - painfully relatable and characteristically un-guarded for Lenae.

Bird’s Eye marks a distinct shift in Ravyn Lenae's artistic journey expanding beyond sexy, strong, and powerful and simultaneously providing an introspective and self-reflective body of work, delving into the complexities of personal growth, vulnerability, and the nuances of her inner world. Exploring themes of identity, relationships, and self-discovery with a raw honesty. In doing so, Lenae showcases a quiet and profound strength.
