Posh Chocolates Pushes Genre Boundaries With EP ‘Clever Weight Champion’

Manchester-based artist Posh Chocolates (Christian Ellery) returns with his new genre-defying project Clever Weight Champion. The five-track EP showcases his range in genres and musical influence, taking listeners on a journey through his unique sound. Although currently based in Manchester, the artist hails from a family of ‘audiophiles’ within his hometown of Wales.

Posh Chocolates’ musical journey began when he started learning Nirvana songs on his guitar. He later discovered his fascination for engineering and audio production which later developed into learning more about synthesisers and sampling. The artist’s uniqueness is characterised by his control of all aspects of his music, from production to songwriting as well as vocals. Following session work for Miller Blue, he was inspired to mould his love for guitar and dance music into what is now Posh Chocolates. The artist has recently signed with LA-based label GODMODE, with the new EP showcasing an introduction to his style.

Overall, Ellery's EP showcases his unique musical style and production skills. The tracks feature a blend of genres including funk, hip-hop, and electronic. Posh Chocolates' vocals and performances add a catchy and playful touch to the songs, while also showcasing his talents as a rapper. The EP features a variety of instrumentation, from wonky drum beats to lively guitar work and synth bass. Additionally, the use of vocal samples (the sample of King Curtis at the end of ‘Seein’ Stars’ is fantastic) and effects create a contemporary and atmospheric sound.

The final track, ‘Level Up,’ stands out through its hip-hop sampling which is reminiscent of the production on old Kanye albums, further showcasing Ellery's ability to create memorable and refined tracks.
