Playboi Carti Finally Delivers I Am Music After Brief Delay – A Bold Evolution of His Sound

Updated: Mar 15

Playboi Carti's long-awaited third studio album, "I Am Music," is finally available for consumption following a brief delay that had fans concerned about another postponed launch. Initially slated for midnight, the album became available a few hours later, alleviating fans' anxieties and marking the end of a prolonged anticipation period. The journey to this release has been marked by numerous delays and title changes. Initially announced in March 2021 under the title "Narcissist," the album underwent several transformations before settling on "I Am Music."

This 30 track project introduces Carti's innovative "burnt music" sound, a term coined by producer Cardo to describe their experimental approach. Drawing inspiration from a diverse array of influences, including the gritty aesthetics of Three 6 Mafia's DJ Paul and Juicy J, the distinctive styles of DJ Toomp and The Legendary Traxster, and even the cinematic compositions of filmmaker John Carpenter. The album seamlessly blends elements of punk rock, trap, and rap. This fusion results in a distinctive sonic experience that pushes the boundaries of contemporary hip-hop.

The production roster boasts an impressive lineup of industry heavyweights, including Kanye West, Travis Scott, Mike Dean, Metro Boomin, F1lthy, Ojivolta, Lil 88, and Lucian. Their contributions have crafted a dynamic and versatile backdrop, allowing Carti to explore and experiment with his vocal delivery and thematic content. The beats throughout the album provide a robust platform for Carti's artistic exploration, enabling him to traverse new sonic territories while maintaining the raw energy characteristic of his earlier work.

"I Am Music" not only showcases Carti's evolution as an artist but also pays homage to his previous projects. Listeners will recognise subtle nods to the minimalist style of his self-titled debut mixtape and the avant-garde elements of "Whole Lotta Red." Additionally, the album incorporates more commercial influences, blending rock and trap rap to create a sound that is both innovative and accessible.

The 30-track album features collaborations with prominent artists such as Travis Scott, the Weeknd, Skepta, Future, Kendrick Lamar, Lil Uzi Vert, Ty Dolla $ign, and Young Thug. In support of the album, Playboi Carti is set to join the Weeknd on his "After Hours Til Dawn" stadium tour, which kicks off on May 9, 2025, in Phoenix and concludes on September 3, 2025, in San Antonio.

"I Am Music" is now available on all major streaming platforms.
