Pinkpantheress' latest single 'Angel' christens Barbie with Wings

The build-up to Greta Gerwig’s film Barbie has rebranded our reality hot pink. Her film’s soundtrack, Barbie the Album, promises no less of an impact.

Much like the star-studded cast – including Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken - the album promises tracks from equally acclaimed names. Barbie the Album will feature Nicki Minaj, Ice Spice, Lizzo, Charli XCX, Dua Lipa, Ava Max, Tame Impala, Dominic Fike, and The Kid Laroi. The soundtrack has been produced by the trusted hands of Oscar, Golden Globe and 7X Grammy Award Winner Mark Ronson.

However, it is UK-based producer and artist PinkPantheress who has won the hearts of New Wave. Following initial teaser videos for the film, which aptly garnered over 6M+ views, her track ‘Angel’ was revealed by Atlantic Records to precurse its release.

The track is characteristically PinkPantheress, combing electronic genre flexing to form the unique ‘alt-pop’ genre. PinkPatheress' sound is inspired by 90’s dance music, UK garage, funk and jungle, and forms a musical language which flirts somewhere between bedroom pop and hyperpop.

‘Angel’ continues to toy between genres, while simultaneously with the nostalgic and contemporary. The track layers happy instrumentals, including a Celtic-esque violin riff, over metallic vocals which adopt PinkPantheress’ iconic ‘alt-girl rap’, with her iconic DIY beats which is signature to her music and Garage band origins.

PinkPantheress’ polished electronica effortlessly captures the fantastical nature of Barbie-land and all its seamlessly manufactured aesthetic, while remaining authentic to both PinkPantheress and Gerwig’s vision. ‘Angel’ feels naturally feminine and girly, as PinkPatheress dresses her lyrics in beautifully composed outfits. The track truly embodies the audio personification of the fictional character which has united so many of our childhood experiences.

After a huge 2022, being nominated for the Brit Award for the Song of the Year, featuring on Vogue’s prestigious 25 influential women’s list, sold-out tours across the UK, EU and US, winning BBC’s Sound of 2022 and three separate nominations for NME awards, PinkPantheress is gaining a sonically regal reputation which ‘Angel’ is a testament to.

While we patiently wait for both the film and its soundtrack, ‘Angel’ encourages high expectations as to the meticulous creation of the film and all its contributors. Barbie the film and the album will be available on Friday 21st July.
