Non-Conformist Downtown Kayoto Shares New 'Changed It' And Announces New EP

Refusing the typical genre limitations that society and the mainstream industry try to and impose. Once again, free spirit Downtown Kayoto experiments to create art.

‘Changed It’ can easily be a statement for a wider conversation about how musicians and artists explore different sounds like, Downtown Kayto to best express themselves.

However, this time, the Zimbabwe-born and Hull-raised artist uses R&B, Indie and electronic elements to create the perfect soundscape to admit to his shortcomings.

He finds comfort in his honesty and actively works through his own “mess” on the upbeat percussion, meshed with the undertones of an electric guitar.

On the track's lyrical inspiration, Downtown Kayoto explained: “I made this in a time in which I got into a big fight/argument with my ex. At the time I made it I thought I was at my worst and things couldn’t get any worse, but boy was I wrong. What shortly followed was my worst.

I got scared for a long time because it was like the things I wrote foreshadowed the future, so for a long time I was scared to talk ill of myself in my music. I was only experiencing the “I’m still a mess” bit of the song but I clung onto the “unless I change it” part for hope.

It was me choosing to use commas instead of full stops, I am a mess, I’m all over the place and up until now I’m piecing things together but I will be okay, we all will be… I truly believe this in my core.”

The accompanying visuals cleverly referenced photographer and poet Ren Hang’s fish-inspired photography. Shots of the artists interacting with bags of fish and in submerged the water, as well as Downtown Kayota lounging in his room surrounded by vinyl and a record player.

In the video recorded footage depicting fish moving in real-time is a metaphor to convey the sense of fish out of water and man out of air motif. Whilst also unintentioninglystriking similarities to South Central Rapper Vince Staples ‘Big Fish Theory’ album.

Downtown Kayota new EP 'Learning In Public', is due for release on 15th June via the label Other Project.
