Based in South West London, dexter cascaded onto the scene with her kaleidoscopic debut EP I Do Love a Good Sandwich, a four-prolonged project that disregarded stylistic boundaries and led the way into the formulation of the new wave of indie pop. Endearing and poignant, dexter serves her cynicism with cream on top, gently expressing her anguish through light-hearted societal meanderings.
Fresh of the back of a UK tour with Denzel Curry and newly signed to Corteiz’s record label RULESTHEWORLD, the singer-songwriter makes a vibrant return with ‘Pressure’, an anthemic cut about the topsy-turvy challenges of youth and the necessity of self-progression. Exploring her theme with wistful exuberance, dexter writes without baggage, free in her feelings, as she emerges at an uplifting conclusion. The instrumentation matches this climax by raising the timbre to vibrant heights in the crisp production, with emotive acoustic guitar counteracted by bouncy drums and pitched down vocals.
The accompanying video makes superb use of colour and setting, as we visually see dexter’s vocal realisation that she can be who she wants and should be comfortable with her own uncertainty. After all, who knows what’s going on? All we can do is enjoy the ride; dexter certainly seems to be.
