The art of balancing is something that we all strive for as we begin adulting. The more intense life is, the less time we have for friends, family and the need to decompress grows.
And in her two absence, it seems that Nao has found the right ‘Balance’ for herself as she makes her return with her first single since her third studio album And Then Life Was Beautiful.
The MOBO Award nominee is enthralling with the distinct sound that is utterly her as she breathes life into the minimalistic electronic beat in what is considered a turn towards an experimental new sound that differs slightly from her soulful ballads.
Produced by Stint and Omega, the production is upbeat and infectious and provides the perfect soundscape. The track also features Jamaican rapper Skillibeng who interjects with typically infectious dancehall vibes.
Finding freedom from the intensity of life by re-centring yourself and rather, slowing down to take enjoyment and pleasure from your experiences.
The track is relatability as it favours reconnecting with herself and the world and inspired by NAO’s own experiences, the track is a rediscovery of self, amidst all the changes she has gone through over the past few years.
NAO says: “The track is a fun way of exploring boundaries. For me, mine is having a better Balance in life. I used to be a workaholic which eventually took a big toll on my well-being. Once I found a better Balance in life it was important to let other people in my life know that I had shifted into a new way of being and to understand that.”
Drawing from her West Indian heritage, of the Caribbean islands of Jamacia and St. Vincent she finds a vibrancy in the visuals of the accompanying video.
Directed by Shane Creative in Jamaica, the video details the vivid and colourful party lifestyle, enjoyment and carefree nature of the island.
