Current New Wave Magazine Cover Star and R&B Soulstress Nao, has recently released her brand-new single ‘Happy People’ off her forthcoming fourth studio album Jupiter, scheduled for release on 21st February. Co-written with several exceptionally talented songwriters including Lauren Keen (Raye’s younger sister), the song is a vibrant explosion of joyous energy.
With her previous albums being released to critical acclaim and multiple major award nominations under her belt, including several BRIT nominations, a Mercury Prize nomination and a Grammy nomination, Nao has cemented herself as one of the UK’s most lauded talents, and ‘Happy People’ is yet another testament that supports this.
Delivering her staple unique vocal tone that gives an ethereal quality to the song, alongside guitar riffs and an afro-beat style production, ‘Happy People’ has a somewhat earthly texture to it. The producers, Stint and Yakob have managed to capture a sound that truly reflects the message behind Nao’s lyrics.
“You show me you care, and you know I care. So why should we care, ‘bout anyone’s cares”. Lyrically, the song is rooted in finding and nurturing the relationships that mean the most to us and blocking any outside noise that tries to disrupt this.
Both the lyrics and production intertwine the feeling of purity and rejuvenation in finding happiness with the people around us, which is further accentuated by her delicate vocals. After hearing this, I immediately want to hear Nao perform a completely stripped back version of the track as well.
Her forthcoming album Jupiter is being supported by her headlining tour commencing in February where she will perform in the UK, Europe and North America. The tour includes a stop at London’s Brixton Academy on March 12th.
