Over the years Freya Roy has been known to blur the lines of genres to fuse nu-jazz, electronic sounds, instruments and multilayered beats to create her own distinctively smooth sound. The Suffolk born songwriter's lyricism is refreshing and her vocals reminiscent of a lost old soul.
Further pushing the boundaries of her musicality with the new single 'Day is Done', which is part of her forthcoming EP 'For Who I Have Become', the track is an optimistic record about looking to brighter days, embracing change and rejecting the dark clouds. The electric sound provides a warm summer feel as Freya ponders over new beginnings.
The whole production of the track immediately puts you at ease, drawing you in as you hear Freya's honey-sweet vocals hypnotizing and melodic. The track is complemented with an appearance from South London rapper Deacon whose flow is smooth as he deliveries thought-provoking lyrics
Freya commenting on the collab: "‘Day Is Done’ is the final tune that I wrote off my forthcoming EP. I had an instrumental break in the middle of the track which sat empty for months before I thought to introduce DEACON. I have wanted to work with DEACON for ages, I love his tone and lyrics, and I loved what I first heard when he jumped on with his feature.
The track was pieced together throughout lockdowns, and breaking into dance-like territory, it represents the turning of relationships and navigating life through dark times. I chose to name this after hearing jazz-pianist Brad Mehldau’s rendition of ‘Day Is Done’, originally written by Nick Drake. The track is so beautiful, and I played it a lot when I was navigating a wrist injury and had to take a break from music. It reminds me of pulling through a particularly difficult stage in my life."
With her EP scheduled to drop this Summer, “Day Is Done” adds to an impressive set of releases that will form the project, including featured singles “Naked”, “Calling My Name” and “Fantasies Reimagined” with Gabriel Gifford and Maya Law.
