The borderline between an honest confessional and a captivating story, Soul singer Maya Law’s latest offering ‘6AM’ is an ambiguous take on miscommunication, dissatisfaction and desire that ultimately leads to heartbreak.
Her expressive tone is faultless as she navigates this complex situation, she’s found herself in. She sings “You looked my way and I was falling/ wonder what she said when you called in” with a smooth seductive languid tone
Before seamlessly transitioning into a powerful and passionate delivery, hurting as she is left reeling from the aftermath of the failing relationship.
Experimental in not just the way the Norfolk artist is telling the story, but also in the electronic beat that she has leant towards in this occasion.
Against the backdrop of a thrilling experimental sound, produced by regular collaborator Freya Roy there are electronic elements, drums, hi-hats and a cutting rhythmic electric guitar that dips into the waters of multiple genres such as soul, jazz and R&B.
Sharing the inspiration behind the track, Maya Law says “6AM is a story of drunk chats, drunk confessions and hungover realisations. We’ve all been a bit loose-lipped when we’ve had one too many but this time it landed me in a sticky situation.
It’s much more of a story than a song for me, I wanted people to listen, read between the lines, and be able to work out what had happened. It’s the first time I’ve written from someone else’s point of view, and tried to fill in the gaps of a situation I wasn’t sure about.”
Recently Maya has announced that she will be headling The Social in London on 7th December 2023.
