One who strives to tell authentic and honest stories, Birmingham’s rapper Marnz Malone brings notice to a pandemic of suicides that occur during police custody, hoping to press on the depths of the topic with his usual direct approach on ‘I Hate January’.
On the soul sampled beat, Marnz is a forceful presence as he leans into the deeply personal; expressing his grief at losing a close friend to suicide and the struggle to accept the reality of it.
KayMuni, featuring on the track, provides his own thought-provoking wordplay as he finds comfortable in the shared memories of his friend who passed – the bass cutting into the raw emotion.
Marnz Malone commenting on 'I Hate January says: “January is naturally the most depressing time of the year. I wrote the verse speaking about things that make me depressed, being in Jail, losing my bredrin, growing up in poverty. I felt it was only right for the video to focus on depression in custody and how it can end with people taking their lives in this hopeless place"
Following the cultural and mainstream success of his 2024 mixtape Tina's Boy’, The track will also appear on Marnz Malone’s next mixtape Sabr.
