Mariella Finds Strength In Letting Go On Single 'Clueless'

Peeking her head in the alternative R&B scene, singer/songwriter Mariella exhibits her soulful sound through the release of her debut single ‘Clueless’. After leaving school at age seventeen to pursue a career in music, Mariella is developing her artistry through her honest lyricism, drawing inspiration from iconic female musicians.

After graduating from BIMM with a degree in songwriting, she continues to evolve and push her sound forward. Having collaborated with British house duo Dusky on their song ‘Pressure’, Mariella shows both her versatility and ability to introduce her sound to a new genre. Furthermore, her songs have been featured on Spotify playlists ‘New Music Friday UK’ and ‘Fresh Finds UK & IE’, signifying her growing musical recognition.

Her ‘Inspirations’ playlist on Spotify lists many renowned female singer/songwriters including Jill Scott, Lauryn Hill and Cleo Sol. It's easy to see the influence of these artists through Mariella’s delicate yet moving vocals and powerful range, reminiscent of artists like Jorja Smith (another cited inspiration). The new single's relaxed, experimental R&B production matched with her soulful lyricism makes for perfect laid-back listening.

‘Clueless’ lays bare her experience with falling in love with someone, realising that she’s overly romanticised them and seeing the futility of the relationship: ‘Oh my gosh / I’ve been so foolish / Romanticising you / Tell me, why I gotta do this?’. Speaking on the subject matter behind the song, Mariella explains how it was about "channelling feelings of anger, betrayal and present emotions into music...

Not only was the song an instant favourite of mine, but it also signified a big shift in my creative direction and the start of a new chapter in my life, both musically and personally. For that reason, it’s always felt like a really special song.”

Layered over the dreamy R&B by East-London-based producer Federico Bigonzetti, Mariella’s soothing vocals open the door for exciting future collaborations. A catalyst for her soulful sound, the single tells a familiar tale of unrequited love and betrayal: one that many people can relate to.
