Lorde Reclaims Her Synth-Pop Throne with Introspective New Single “What Was That”

Lorde has made a compelling return with her new single, "What Was That," released on 24 April 2025. This marks her first original solo release in nearly four years, following her 2021 album Solar Power.

Co-written with Jim-E Stack and produced alongside Stack and Dan Nigro, "What Was That" sees Lorde revisiting the emotionally charged synth-pop sound reminiscent of her 2017 album Melodrama. The track delves into themes of heartbreak, introspection, and emotional rebirth, with lyrics that suggest a reflection on past relationships and personal growth.

Ahead of the single's official release, Lorde surprised fans with an impromptu performance at Washington Square Park in New York City. The unannounced event drew a massive crowd, leading to police intervention due to the lack of a permit.Despite the chaos, Lorde managed to play the full song on a speaker, creating a memorable experience for attendees.

The accompanying music video, reportedly filmed by Lorde herself, features scenes of her cycling through New York City streets, capturing a sense of urban solitude and introspection. The video culminates with footage from the Washington Square Park event, blending personal moments with public engagement.

"What Was That" serves as the lead single for Lorde's forthcoming fourth studio album, the details of which are yet to be announced. The single's release has reignited interest in Lorde's music, signaling an exciting new chapter in her artistic journey
