Following the success of his sophomore album Lahai, Sampha treated us to an extended version of the single ’Satellite Business.’ However, this time with additional support from none other than the U.K’s very own, Little Simz.
“I’d always imagined a guest verse to expand on it. Simz’s music has been close to my heart and ears for sometime now which makes her being on this song that more special.”
Listening to Satellite Business in this new context allows the emotions and vulnerability of Sampha’s writing in the song to shine right through. What may have been a short snippet, an interlude some might say, in the context of ‘Lahai,’ has now been improved and redefined, allowing the masterpiece to stand on its own.
From the outset of the track the additional sounds in the production hit you, letting you know the song has been elevated from its previous state.
The refreshing switch-up in sound through the latter half of the track, provided by frequent collaborator of Sampha, Kwake Bass, allows Simz to glide straight through her verse, expanding on the topics of infinity and faith, fostering the same thoughts Sampha provides in the original track along with his new verse too.
Speaking about the collaboration, Simz noted;
“I’m so honoured to be a part of this record with Sampha. We have great musical chemistry and respect of each other’s process.”
This song proves its point, from sounding like it has been made in outer space while also transcending between topics of energy and spirit, inviting unfamiliar and alternative sounds to the ever-growing music scene. Whether you have dived into the world of Sampha’s music before, or this is your first introduction, the track embodies a familiar aura that Sampha is known for without ever sounding repetitive.
