Lil Silva: Yesterday Is Heavy (Album Review)

After a solid decade of consistent EPs and singles, Lil Silva returns with the album Yesterday Is Heavy – a masterpiece ten years in the making.

Lil Silva is known for his contributions to the club and dance scene of the early 10s and Yesterday Is Heavy offers more funky genre-bending beats. The album ranges from hip hop, and R&B to techno, rap and dub all the way to bass. Lil Silva’s musical versatility shines through and promises something for everyone in his 12-track offering. While Lil Silva may have more eclectic tracks on this album than others such as his 2016 EP Jimi, his innovative talent shines through as he combines new sonic directions and voices.

The album includes collaborations with Sampha, Ghetts, BADBADNOTGOOD, Little Dragon, serpentwithfeet, Charlotte Day Wilson and Skiifall. Lil Silva has always been blessed with conscious music production having worked with Mark Ronson, Adele, and BANKS previously, yet Lil Silva always manages to remain authentic to his sound.

The album comes full circle as it was created in his hometown of Bedford, emphasising the message of his album’s rich construction process: trusting in the process and hope. Lil Silva obtains the rewards that 10 years of absorbing diverse musical influences offers, Yesterday Is Heavy negotiates timelessness with the simultaneous promise of futurism.
