La Dolce Vita: What to Wear on Your Italian Holiday

Italy is a wonderful place to be at any time of year, but during spring the country has a fresh and inspiring character that makes it perfect for visiting – whatever region you intend to visit.

But exactly what should you wear while travelling this part of the world? Let’s consider how you might dress like an Italian.

Romantic Riviera Chic 

The coastal regions around Amalfi, Capri, and Sicily won’t be quite as hot (and crowded) as they will be during summer – but you’ll still be able to soak in the inspiring cliffsides and glittering azure sea, while enjoying relatively warm weather. A flowing maxi dress, , a mini-dress, like the one recently sported by Selena Gomez in Cannes, or a co-ordinated linen ensemble, might allow you to enjoy the warm weather.

For the same reason, strappy sandals and wide-brimmed hats might appeal. A lightweight scarf might complete your outfit; it might be just the thing for when the sea breeze begins to bite.

Countryside Retreat 

If you’re heading into the Italian countryside with a wine tour of Tuscany or Umbria, then you might look to wrap up slightly warmer. Knitted jumpers, tailored jeans, and wool coats might all be worthwhile. You’ll need the right footwear for exploring those rural pathways and cobblestone-covered village streets. If you really want to dress like a local, however, the versatility of the right silk scarf might be essential. You might tie yours around your neck, or around your head.

Skiing in Style

The Italian skiing experience is slightly distinct from the one you might find elsewhere in the Alps. The Dolomites, Courmayeur and Corina d’ampezzo: they’re all characterised by copious retail opportunities, and an emphasis on style and fashion. You might see your time on the slopes as a chance to express yourself through your attire during your Italian ski holidays. 

But exactly what’s worth wearing? Look for ski suits, or trousers with a high waist and a fitted knit. Or maybe a puffer jacket, or a coat trimmed out in faux fur. Moon boots might be just the thing to keep your feet warm during apres-ski sessions.

Of course, lip balm is essential if you’re going to stay hydrated and healthy. A set of oversized ski goggles might help you to keep the glare away, and make a statement at the same time.

Safety is also a special concern. Don’t sacrifice it for the sake of looking good. Fortunately, there are many ways to balance both concerns. For example, you might pick from a range of stylish helmets. Braid your hair, and make use of leave-in conditioner and anti-static cloth, to reduce the risk of hat hair!
