Gradually in life, you grow apart from the people who once meant everything to you, becoming strangers who share fond memories.
And now occupying a space in her life where she is gaining accolades and awards in the music world, as well as challenging herself as an artist Kali Uchis comes to the conclusion that to gain something you have to be willing to accept the loss but also a keen awareness that just because something doesn’t last forever it doesn't take anything anyway from its beauty or meaningfulness if anything it adds to it.
The heartfelt and good-natured ‘I Wish You Roses’, has minimalistic instrumentation that soothes you at once, complimenting Kali’s sweet and silky voice as she wishes her person well “I wish you flowers while you can still smell ‘em”. She explores concepts of morality, hinting that their time is coming to an end in each other’s lives but appreciates the experience.
“This song is about being able to release people with love,” Uchis says. “It could be a friend, a lover, or someone else, but the point is to celebrate releasing people from your life without being resentful or bitter.”
The accompanying video is directed by Cho Gi-Seok in Korea and we see scenes of Kali surrounded by roses and other flowers, also at times blooming into a flower herself. The aesthetic images show the roses and what they signify reinforces the message of the song. To find beauty in grace.
Kali Uchis rose to prominence in 2015, and then followed it up with her 2018 debut album, Isolation and then releasing in 2020 Sin Miedo (del Amor y Otros Demonios) a Spanish language album.
With the release of 'I Wish You Rose' signals a new musical direction, we cannot wait to hear what else Kali has been cooking up with her new upcoming album Red Moon In Venus on the way.
