The definition of ‘Survivor’s Guilt’ is the condition of feeling guilty after surviving a situation in which others died or were harmed. The guilt spills out.
Joey Bada$$ in his new single ‘Survivor's Guilt’ has given himself the responsibility to tell the stories of the departed. It’s a tribute to the late Pro Era rapper Capita STEEZ’s life and musical legacy and to Joey's late cousin Junior B.
The Bed-Stuy rapper goes deep with introspective lyrics that have the essence of the old school New York rap that Joey grew up surrounded by and in an industry that is built on bravado and being the hardest Joey demonstrates a powerful vulnerability.
He touches on the deaths of those closest to him and how the trauma is still affecting him, also reflecting on his battle with mental health.
We also in a way get to be reintroduced to Joey himself through the telling of the stories of his friends. He raps “if you ain't know Steelo then you really don't know me though."
Speaking on the track, Joey shares: "this song is by far the most heartfelt song I’ve ever made and it felt incredibly therapeutic finally being able to put my thoughts and sentiments into words."
The track was released ahead of his forthcoming album, 2000, dropping later this month on July 22nd via Pro Era/Ministry Of Sound
2000 will arrive nearly 10 years to the date after his classic mixtape, 1999 and can be considered a continuation from where the mixtape left off. The album title serves as a reminder for the world that time is a concept and it’s really just been one long year since Joey and Pro Era exploded onto the scene in 2012.
We can look forward to hearing the new project and also experiencing it live when Joey tours in the UK later this year.
