Scottish singer and multi-instrumentalist Tamzene’s debut EP ‘Details’ showcases her ability to create a project that truly enraptures listeners with honest intricate lyrics and overflowing emotion. The 6 tracks are inspired by the period of lockdown when everybody had the desire to reconnect with themselves and their loved ones.
The leading track ‘Call you out’, is led with a solo piano introduction immediately giving it an intimate feel, setting the tone for the rest of the project. Short by sweet it’s a tender rendering that showcases the quality of her melancholic voice. Written over Zoom in the summer of 2020 against a backdrop of racial injustice and worldwide protest, it’s a bitter goodbye to a once close friend who has opposing views.
On ‘Cut me out of your photographs’ backed by synths and an acoustic guitar, the songstress nostalgically places herself in memories of the past, she is missing an ex-love. Whilst ‘New beginnings’ is more joyful in nature, highlighting her soulful voice which washes over you with ease you can clearly hear the Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald influences.
The recent single ‘Dance with you again’ is a ballad dedicated to Tamzene’s mother who lives in Jamacia. Tamzene sings in a soft and gentle tone about finding old family videotapes that spark childhood memories of good times. In ‘Only an Ocean’ the singer is in a reflective mood showing off her incredible vocal range, hitting high notes. She delicately touches on the fact that places only hold meaning because of the people we associate them with and that strong bonds can withstand any distance.
“It’s about the last week we spent together before the world shut down and it is very special to me”: says Tamzene
Finally the last track of the project ‘Ripcord’, she displays a rawness that was missing in the other songs leaving us in awe. The track is about the simplicity of being present and the beauty of it which is often underappreciated.
Commenting on it, she said: “It’s about being in love and how that can truly lift you up and ground you all at the same time.”
The summer will see Tamzene play at festivals such as Bestival, Boardmasters, and Brixton’s Cross The Tracks. Tamzene has also just announced a four-date UK tour, kicking off in Glasgow in November and culminating in London at Laylow. Full dates are listed below.
