Hope and trust are two things that The Abuja-born, Lagos-based singer-songwriter Rigo Kamp treasures above anything, and finding joy in the good moments, he expresses his happiness over a double release on his debut.
The newly Native Records signee adds his district voice to a label who already has prominent voices such as ODUMODUBLVCK and Bloody Civilian, and demonstrating his own ability on the timeless ‘Summer’.
‘Summer’ is embodiment of all the feelings that are associated with summertime. His vocals are light, and darts across a pop-disco soundscape that is Prince-esque, who is one the Abuja born singer’s influences and full of Techni-colour.
Speaking about ‘Summer’, he says:“ Even though Nigeria doesn’t have a summer, I think summer represents happiness.
My summer is triumphing over the bad times. Despite all the NO’s, I only see YES’s every day until I make it. That’s Rigo.”
The accompanying video for Summer perfectly reflects the synergy of the Funk and Disco aesthetics that Kamp has drawn from sonically.
In contrast ‘Morning Sun’, proves his worth as a technical vocalist as he climbs up and down the musical scale. Kamp’s falsetto notes are melancholic and arching as he yearns – his voice penetrates you, before he gracefully falls down to a warm caress.
Violins in the background are swallowed by melodic keys that submerge us in a 70s nostalgic feel and an upbeat quirky bass that grooves with a style that mixes Alternative R&B, Funk, Electronic, Disco as he expresses his faith in life.
“This is a record about trust”. he says: You wake up every morning and you see the sun rise. You trust that it will rise again, you never have to worry.
“If you can find that trust in anyone or in any thing in life, that’s all you can really ask for.”
