Gucci SS25: An Ode to the Sixties...

Gucci’s SS25 collection, unveiled at Milan Fashion Week, was a poetic love letter to the glamour of the past, captured through the more contemporary viewpoint of Sabato De Sarno. In his second collection as creative director, De Sarno delivered a striking tribute to the elegance of the 60s whilst blowing a breath of new life into it, presenting a seamless blend of old-school sophistication with the sharp, avant-garde edge of today's fashion landscape.

The show, held at the iconic Triennale di Milano, unfolded like a perfectly timed sunset. De Sarno himself described it as an invitation to embrace fleeting beauty, likening the collection to "the moment the sun dives into the sea at the end of an August day." This imagery became the heartbeat of the collection, not only through its color palette filled with hues of sunset oranges, coral pinks, and shimmering gold - but also through the overall mood, one that evoked nostalgia, serenity, and the balance between classic and current.

De Sarno’s inspiration was clearly drawn from the style of Jackie Kennedy, whose signature outfits left an undeniable mark on fashion. Gucci's SS25 models sauntered down the runway in high-waisted, cigarette-slim trousers worn with structured blazers that echoed Jackie-O’s timeless grace. The silhouettes were clean and precise, reflecting an unmistakable opulence. A-line dresses, one of the quintessential shapes of the ‘60s, made a strong appearance, but they were reinterpreted with a modern twist - bolder, sharper, and more daring.

The collection wasn’t just a nod to the past; it felt very much alive in the present. De Sarno took these classic forms and injected them with youthful energy. A hint of rebellion simmered beneath the surface, seen in the clever play of proportions and the inclusion of luxe streetwear elements, like oversized sunglasses and glossy loafers. The slim-fitting trousers and structured jackets, though restrained, were accompanied by oversized Jackie O style sunglasses, giving a playful nod to the 1960s without feeling dated.

The materials De Sarno employed were a crucial part of the collection’s narrative. Luxurious and romantic fabrics like cashmere, silk, and velvet intermingled with casual staples like denim and cotton, symbolizing the intersection of everyday ease with high fashion. It’s this blend of "casual grandeur" that defined the collection - a term De Sarno coined to describe his new direction for Gucci. The juxtaposition of silk evening dresses with leather handbags or denim pants with velvet blazers created an effortlessly chic vibe, making high fashion feel tangible and wearable

Accessories were also pivotal, with Gucci's Jackie bags making a return. These iconic bags, reimagined in newer, younger prints and varying sizes, paired amazingly with the timeless yet modern garments, embodying Gucci’s air of elegance. Loafers were given new life in high-gloss leather, further balancing the collection’s play between old and new.

Gucci’s SS25 collection was more than a showcase of clothing - it was an opportunity to relish in luxury and style in their most simple forms. By channeling the 1960s and fusing it with contemporary elements, De Sarno crafted a collection that was both a longing for the past and a bold step into the future. The elegant tailoring, the luxurious yet accessible fabrics, and the playful but sophisticated accessories all came together to create a story of timeless elegance redefined for the modern era.
