Describing himself as “an artist, a global star, an icon”,  Moelogo, the 33-year-old singer/songwriter has been in the industry for over a decade. Making his mark early on in his career, he received a MOBO nomination in 2015, only 2 years after the release of his debut EP (Moe Is My Name, Music Is My Logo). New Wave Magazine sat down with Moelogo to talk all things music, including his journey thus far as well as his recent EP – “Point of view".

Born and raised in Nigeria (Ondo state) until the age of 10,  his love for music developed from “going to Church with his grandmother” and upon realising his talent in this area he later began using music as a means of self-expression and sharing his feelings with others . After moving to the UK in later years, the artist seamlessly blended the two which he explained has “created who he is today”.

With a big smile, Moelogo proudly categorises his sound as “healing” and “unboxable”, going on to describe himself as a vessel for the people who listen to his music. The artist also seeks to offer people the opportunity to feel that they can relate to the lyrics.

He speaks positively of his musical journey thus far mentioning that it “has been a blessed one” whilst acknowledging that it has fostered growth on both a professional and personal level. Speaking to the Afrobeats/Afroswing music scene in the UK, Moelogo shares that it has been “amazing”, highlighting that all involved contribute differently and he waits in anticipation for what is to come.

Recently Moelogo featured on a song with Dyo as part of a project titled ‘Good morning Kevin’, an animation of a bear in space. The song which is titled ‘never speak’ has gained a lot of traction, sitting at over 50k views in the space of a month. Moelogo sheds light on the meaning of this song – “its about telling people don’t speak dirt on my name...I’m a solid guy, I’m a stand-up guy”.

Moelogo’s EP - Point of view features 6 tracks which the artist describes as emerging during a period of “soul-searching”, with the aim of the project being to “tackle things like spirituality, religion, love, societal things” in an effort to offer his perspective and share how he sees things. The project also showcases Moelogo’s passion for embracing his roots, made clear in one of his favourite songs from the EP (Where I’m from), which speaks to the importance of seeking out one’s own heritage – “I know where home is, and I will never forget that.”

Proudly singing in his mother tongue (Yoruba) across several tracks, Moelogo is firm in his belief that the beauty is in “the feeling” that music brings as opposed to having to “understand everything that is being said in a song”.

As the interview draws to a close, Moelogo hints to new music and more live shows in the pipeline. With a strong discography, we can’t help but remain excited to see what the future holds for him.
