Get To Know: Lagoon Wavey

Hailing from Barbados, 21-year-old musician Lagoon Wavey has been steadily climbing the ranks within the R&B scene as his sound combines elements of sensual Neo-soul, catchy alternative R&B and flowing island sounds. As he continues to perfect his craft and reach worldwide audiences with his music, his COLORS debut of single 'Occupied' has amassed nearly 200k views only further displaying his talent and knack for songwriting and solidifying his placement within the underground R&B scene.

When Lagoon Wavey was younger, he says that it was a process of elimination when it came to deciding that pursuing music was something he wanted to do since he was always interested in the sciences. When it came to how the music scene was in Barbados, the biggest artist to come out of Barbados outside of Calypso and Soca was none other than musician, designer and business-owner Rihanna. With this in mind, Lagoon has always wanted to break boundaries when it comes to his music and push even further to get his name out in the world. "I was obviously doubting myself like 'I'm not really sure if I can do that'," he says. "but overtime I was like you know, what if? If I don't try it, I will never be satisfied with my life so yeah so that's what this is." With Rihanna being one of his biggest inspirations when it comes to his songwriting, The Weeknd, Frank Ocean, FKA Twigs, Moses Sumney and Daniel Caesar all follow suit when it comes to influences within Lagoon Wavey's style and approach to his craft.

With his most recent single 'Highway' fit with hazy visuals, it further displays Lagoon Wavey's depth and exploration into R&B, as well as his introspective songwriting talents. With the track displaying a more sultry side to Lagoon Wavey, it also draws a heavy likeness to The Weeknd. The track and visuals were to evoke affection and intimacy between Lagoon and Kamira (model) as well as the visuals portraying their silhouettes against deep red backgrounds. The colours bounce from blue and orange every now and again as they we move between shots Lagoon, Kamira and them together.

Directed by movement director and choreographer Eleanor Grace Hann, she mentions that "It was really important to me to show the intimacy between Lagoon Wavey and Kamira, rather than the objectification of a females body in that space; something typically seen in this genre of videos. I really wanted to play with the exposure of such an intimate time but not so obvious hence the use of silhouettes. I loved the production of the beats in the song, and that’s where I knew I wanted some movement in the video too.”

With the creation of 'Highway' a completely different approach to his work up until now, Lagoon Wavey is showing that he has matured and this translates through his music. "I feel as though as I’m growing older, I feel holding in my lyrics so I wanted that to be clear in the song." He says. "A friend of mine was sending me beats and highway was one of them, it just felt like it had the right attitude for what I was going for, I also had a lot of fun recording it and just being myself. The music video was such a fun experience as well, was a really intimate space and I’ve always wanted to do a silhouette shoot, a lot of the shots were done quickly as well everyone was just flowing, definitely a highlight of the trip for me and I hope everyone enjoys.”

With his forthcoming EP on the way, Lagoon Wavey has already seen success from receiving a co-sign from DJ and radio host Jamz Supernova from being labelled as 'one to watch'. With his 2021 project The Shore as well as his latest single 'Highway' showing off impressive production by the likes of Leejo, Mohammed Hanif and Haley Maul who understand his vision and sound, Lagoon Wavey is gearing up to his best project yet.
