Fast & Curious Col3trane Takes a New Direction With His First Single of 2024 'Where Have You Been All My Life?'

Better late than never, Col3trane has dropped his first solo single of 2024, ‘Where Have You Been All My Life?’. The Egyptian/American artist has surpassed 275 million streams and no doubt this will increase from the new Alex Naim-produced track. Taking the sultry intimate song to his global audience, Col3trane’s hybrid locations and both US and UK backgrounds ultimately make an unmatched sound in the R&B space.  

The artist describes this release as his “reintroduction… it embodies the mood I’ve been in over the past year”. Col3trane has a unique blend of R&B, his mix of cultures combines references from his background and time in the US. Elements of neo-soul come through from his previous work on this slow drifting track, “I’m tryna move my feet again, I’m tryna find my beat again”. This year’s release is no doubt another introspective single that follows up from his 2022 album Lush Life. He has credited jazz artists, rap and Hip Hop artists among his streaming calibre. One word that always comes to mind when exploring his tracks is experimental. There are many avenues of music that he has entered and mastered. His distinctive soft voice is carried over heavy-hitting bass lines and layered vocal textures in each verse of the track. 

He is always combining moments of his LA life, featuring track titles such as ‘Californication’ lines such as ‘Until I have 90210 on my address’ on track ‘Penelope’. With a unique blend of London and LA points of view, Col3trane embraces the sounds of each landscape and the talent in both cities collaborating with American R&B artist Kiana Lede and British Jazz phenomenon Raye. There are no boundaries to creating Col3trane’s sound but notably, he has taken the time to develop from earlier releases in his career. Tracks such as ‘Whatchumacallit’ released in 2021 comprise Cole3trane’s ability to experiment with futuristic sounds, freely express his emotions in his lyricism and play with electronic production while taking on different genres. 

The musician is a polymath talent, modelling for his Vogue Italia feature in 2022, the 25-year-old also contributes to streetwear culture and fashion not to mention his appearance in the Moncler x Palm Angels campaign. 

An endless highway stretch of situations and representations in LA induced bittersweet luxuries and ultimately Col3trane’s self-reflection during this period of redirection and discovery. A melodic journey of winding routes displacing his energy in the complexities of relationships, loneliness and yearning for comfort and support from love interests.

The music video accompanies the single’s chaotic energy, fast-paced intensity. It showcases the switch-up in tempo and melody through dynamic camera angles and shots of Col3trane riding through the city in a blue BMW M3 E46. The car circles the artist in intense spinning motions altered by flashes of blue lights. Blending high-pitched synth sounds heard in the chorus with these visuals illustrate lonely cold nights and depict the poltergeist meaning the artist represents so well through the video. 

This new wave of artistry from Col3trane is a ride to grab a seat on.
