EP Review – Lizzie Berchie: Am I An Adult Yet?

Lizzie Berchie's exquisite sound has led her to gain recognition from the likes of COLORS and the Official Charts. In addition to this, she has had a string of live performances this year including the BBC Introducing stage. Last month, the British-Ghanaian songstress released her second EP: Am I An Adult Yet? This body of work explores the musings of a twenty-something year old across six soulful tracks. With relatable lyrics, this EP offers a glimpse into Lizzie’s thoughts as she portrays an array of emotions and happenings that often come with adulthood and womanhood alike. Am I An Adult Yet? invites listeners to embark on an incredible audio journey filled with seamless vocals.

Lizzie makes a strong start to the EP with Don’t Get Ahead of Yourself ' as she dances between both high and low notes with ease, showing her impeccable range. Such variations can be likened to the highs and lows of early adulthood, with the highs of knowing that "your youthfulness has just begun" and the lows of feeling like time is running out. Berchie describes time as a creeper but "...even if the days... roll away…it’s the little moments", that are to be enjoyed as they come.

The saying goes that there is "beauty in vulnerability". In ‘Flaws & All' Lizzie leans into this harmoniously as she speaks of thinking that the "grass was greener on the other side", but then identifies love as "the water" that is a key part of the recipe for self-acceptance - "flaws and all". Thus showing the importance of loving the whole of oneself.

Berchie turns to clear questioning in ‘Where Did All My Friends Go?’ with the chorus sharing the same words as the title. This track has a reflective feel as we hear Lizzie openly expressing her thoughts on the changing nature of friendships as individuals move through life.

‘Lost A Little’ – The EP closes with what feels like a tale of two lovers shifting between pain and facing the reality that we can sometimes get lost in it all. This track has a choral like sound towards the end calling for a "little more love" before fading out, perfectly rounding up the EP leaving us with lingering thoughts and moments of reflection.

Following the release of this truly captivating EP, Lizzie will be having a headline show at Omeara London on October 22nd.
