EP Review: ‘If It Was Up To Me’: Osas’ Intimate Exploration of Love and Identity

Osas, a rising star in the music scene, has just released a body of work that positions him as one of the most promising upcoming talents in the scene. His journey began at a young age, with his family encouraging him to share his gift with the world. Launching his career on SoundCloud, he quickly gained traction and expanded his reach globally.

A memorable project, Osas’ If It Was Up To Me, is an invitation to understand the artist on a deeper level and a celebration of the milestones that he has already achieved in his career so far.

Every element is fully realised from the production to the lyricism that works hard to tell a cohesive emotive story that offers a deeply personal and evocative exploration of his inner landscape. This project offers a genuine and unfiltered view of the complex emotions and experiences that have shaped Osas' life.

There is a strong sense of identity and perspective that comes through a sophisticated blend of genres and lyricism. Osas invites listeners into his world where he reveals the nuances of his thoughts on love and relationships. It is a powerful skill to so openly weave one's personal and cultural narrative into music, allowing the audience to truly connect.

Hailing from South East London, with roots in Benin City, Nigeria, Osas brings a unique blend of influences to his music. His sound is a blend of the soulful rhythms of R&B and the energy of Afrobeats, reflecting both his London upbringing and Nigerian heritage. "Calm Down," featuring AD and F1, evokes the essence of Edo Funk, presenting a modern interpretation of the music of Benin. The dance between the vibrant percussion and saxophone, echoing the rhythms of Afrobeats and Edo Highlife, combines effortlessly with a smooth R&B melody, resulting in a fusion that is both rhythmically captivating and enjoyable. The EP stands as a testament to merging genres and cultures into a cohesive and captivating sonic experience.

The core of ‘If It Was Up To Me’  lies in its raw honesty. Osas doesn't shy away from baring his soul, delving into the uncertainty and vulnerability that comes with intense emotions. The lyrics often reflect the confusion of feeling deeply but not fully understanding those feelings—a sentiment that resonates with anyone who has grappled with their emotional complexities. In each track, Osas articulates his yearning for inner peace and harmony, both in his personal life and within his relationships. There’s a palpable sense of longing throughout the EP, not just for personal fulfilment but for a broader sense of connection and understanding with those around him. This desire is perhaps most poignantly expressed through his music, where his love for love itself becomes a central theme. Osas isn’t just singing about romantic love but about a profound, almost spiritual connection that transcends the individual.

“Peace” featuring Jbxnu perfectly captures this sentiment. He calls for a need for security and rest in love

expressing a longing for tranquillity and a deep, comforting connection amidst the chaos of life.

This is a progression from the opening song “Bini Tears” which is an honest confession of emotional vulnerability and grappling with emotions that are overwhelming and inescapable. He’s at a loss navigating through uncertainty with a raw intensity that sets the stage for the more refined, yet equally heartfelt expressions that follow in the EP.

"One Wish" highlights Osas' musical prowess as his velvety vocals effortlessly glide over polished beats, creating a soundscape that is both soothing and reflective. His naturally smooth flow enhances the introspective quality of his lyrics, while the clean and sophisticated production ensures the emotional depth of the songs remains front and centre. The EP's sound is intimate yet expansive, inviting listeners into Osas' world while providing ample space for personal reflection.

Osas has achieved many significant milestones in his career, notably his spot in the SpotlightFirst Breakthrough Programme, where he received mentorship from the renowned artist Dave. However, the release of this EP is arguably his most significant milestone yet, as it highlights his growth and maturity as an artist through a cohesive and refined body of work.

The South East Londoner has crafted an EP that’s not only a reflection of his journey but also a universal exploration of the human condition. Which, in a world that often feels chaotic and disconnected, offers a moment of introspection and a reminder of the power of vulnerability and connection. This EP positions Osas as a rising talent to watch, one who has the potential to make a lasting impact with his heartfelt and authentic approach to music.
