Downtown Kayoto Promises a Summer of Anthems With New Single 'Trust You' [Review]

It’s been over one year since I spoke to Downtown Kayoto, fresh out of University on his journey into the music industry. Fast forward to 2024, the artist has released the second single of the upcoming project Thinking With My Ears with no limits to his unwavering talent.

The singer’s vocals can be compared to the UK’s hip hop artist Col3trane or the upbeat melodies of Samm Henshaw’s anthems. However, there are no parallels to the alternative sound of Downtown Kayoto. Following no footsteps other than his own, he builds his image with visuals that match the energy and talent of the music. Credit must be given to the team behind each video as they are nothing short of a representation of the electricity that is felt in the tracks.

Previewing the artist’s new EP, ‘Trust You’ gives listeners an insight into what it is to come from the Hull-born singer. This single feels electric and vibrant in its vulnerable melodies, which is what Downtown Kayoto does best. If you have been around to hear his previous releases such as ‘Run From You’ and ‘Lite’, you will be familiar with the artist’s techniques. You never know what the sound will bring and how the different switch-ups in texture and rhythm can throw you off course from what was expected.

Entering the track with direct questioning, the title suggests exactly what Downtown Kayoto confesses throughout the chorus. The honest and deliberately vulnerable storytelling compels listeners to follow line-by-line to his relationship reflections. Fast-tempo percussion is a key component in the artist’s music paving an upbeat feel for even the more mellow low-mood lyricisms in this release.

There is no doubt that Downtown Kayoto’s new EP will stun fans and invite a new wave of listeners to join the young artist’s journey. Coming this July, prepare for the tunes of the summer fostering his creative ability to elicit nostalgia and good vibes all around.
