Production duo juggernauts Disclosure, have released their latest single ‘King Steps’, with the help of rising star Pa Salieu, and has proven once again why they are one of the most celebrated UK artists since their breakthrough in the early 2010s. With a recent Grammy nomination under their belt for their previous offering ‘She’s Gone, Dance On’, Disclosure continues their upward trajectory.
Their latest track presents itself as a much more daring and bolder piece of work, as it incorporates a wide variety of strains of UK dance music into one song.
The song starts with a soft, simmering backdrop that is slowly rising to the surface, which can make the listener mistake it for being a typical lighthouse track. However, that slow-rising feeling is the production charging up, acting as a tension before letting loose and crashing into a spread of different genres.
With so many different sounds and sonics, intertwining with one another and ferociously going back and forth, it could have been very easy for this song to feel like it was trying to do too much. However, Disclosure, being the masters of the craft they are, made sure not to fall into this trap.
One way they have managed to achieve this level of cohesiveness is to collaborate with Pa Salieu in the true sense of the word. With Disclosure providing a broad scope of diverse sounds with the production, this allows Pa Salieu to come forth and attack the beat with a level of assertion and bravado that gives this song such a strong personality.
Throughout the song, Pa Salieu manages to meticulously align the tonality of his flow with the different textures of the song that come through. Not once, did either the production or rap overpower each other.
Essences of Breakbeat, Garage, Jungle and House, manage to lace ‘King Steps,’ which once again prove Disclosure’s versatility as both producers and artists.
