23-year-old Londoner Debbie expresses the need to escape the intensity of life and just breathe in her new single ‘Cousin’s Car’.
Only releasing six tracks since last year, Debbie has continued to adorn us with her steady and graceful rise, favouring quality, not quantity her other solo releases are relatable in the narratives they tell, often romantic in nature they also explore thoughts on life and are insightful.
On ‘Cousin’s Car’ Debbie once again demonstrates depth and maturity beyond her years but also the ability to craft something beautiful from a difficult situation.
The theme of youth itself is touched on in the track, and the overwhelming of life leads her to evoke a memory that is associated with good times and the promise of escape. The memory triggers the desire to get up and escape
She captures a feeling so effortlessly that everyone at some point in their life can empathise with it. The need to disappear for a moment anywhere and block out all your problems.
BERWYN compliments the track by adding his own soulful vocals to the tracks as he explores the restrictions and negative stereotypes of being in your twenties.
The music video accompanying the track directed by Richard Pope is nostalgic as it’s shot in a retro quality. We see Debbie turn to music as she blocks out two silhouette figures who are staged in the background arguing. The Narrative picks up as BERWYN fixes the car they eventually use to escape.
Speaking on the record, Debbie states “Cousin’s Car is all about escaping. Life can get really intense sometimes, and I like the idea of having the space to get away when and if needed.”
Debbie has listened to the likes of Mary Mary and Kirk Franklin, which is an indication of her rich and resounding voice that is the perfect blend of refreshingly new and intimately familiar
