This year marks 53 years since Earth Day first emerged as a globally celebrated phenomenon. It has provided abundant opportunities for people around the world to unite - not only to celebrate and cherish the planet but also to raise awareness about how it’s essential, whilst we continue to fight the uphill battle for its protection and preservation.
This fight has been captured in sectors such as art, music and most notoriously in fashion.
In fact, Cult Mia is one name that comes to mind when searching for sustainable and ethical pieces. A marketplace platform dedicated to outlandish brands that are worth knowing. I first came across the site when I was searching for an Eid dress, I wanted a unique one-of-one piece that was bold yet ethically cultivated. Long story short I stumbled across a Nara Niro multicolour, Venus-printed, maxi dress. From its delicate hand embroidery to its Indian craftsmanship, the silk ensemble had me sold. I knew Cult Mia was the luxury fashion marketplace I’d tell my friends about.
Established in 2019, the fashion marketplace has become the place to shop and unearth conscious brands such as LaLo, Miscreants, Nue Studios and Janashia. The e-commerce platform has accumulated over 22,300 SKUs and vetted 1,085 brands, across 45 countries, spanning 32 product categories - all housed under 4 core values, the platform’s Cult Causes.
In order to keep the notion of Earth Day alive and to celebrate the existence of Earth Day, they have launched a donation component to further allow fashion enthusiasts like myself to shop consciously and sustainably, right here, whenever we purchase an item. Cult Mia will donate £2 to a charity related to one of the platform’s four causes that the product is tied to:
- Cult Eco – as we look towards the future, Cult Mia is dedicated to the concept of carbon neutral and for this marketplace platform to do their part, all proceeds from products purchased under the Cult Eco category, the focus is to eliminate 25 kg of CO2 during the process of making garments.
- Cult Conscious – is about the Cult Mia’s commitment in aid of unravelling the fashion industry’s significant challenges of today by minimising the issue of overproduction and waste, however encouraging the concept of circular fashion.
- Cult Power – reflects on being a fresh reminder for young women by embracing self-worth within themselves, but more importantly providing them with the appropriate tools to gain education for young girls. Through Cult Power, each donation leads to allocating a notebook to each young girl in Africa to demolish the poverty circle, embracing the importance of education and supporting women & minorities.
- Cult Local – this charity’s aim is a contribute a kit of basic needs for people who are affected by Turkey’s current horrific earthquake that happened a few months ago. As a global fashion marketplace platform that have supported various talented Turkish designers in the past, Cult Mia goes above and beyond to offer their upmost support to local communities and to provide families who can benefit in basic needs when they need it at this time to survive and rebuild their lives again from scratch.
With these donations, Cult Mia illustrates the significance of earth day is much greater than a single-day celebration. It becomes a way of life, embedded in our everyday fashion choices we make. Each purchase we make becomes an evolving celebration of our fruitful planet. Shopping sustainably has never been this easy, so my question to you dear reader is what are you waiting for? Start shopping and get involved in taking care of our planet.
