Coventry’s Finest Mugun Shares New Patois Riddled Rap Banger ‘Old Testament'

Mugun is a Coventry-based rapper who reps the city bare-chested. He has already worked with some of the most artistically inclined rappers of the UK scene such as Kojey Radical and IAMDDB who are known to experiment musically to produce a richly textured and innovative soundscape.

Being cut from a similar cloth Mugun draws from the Reggae and Dancehall sounds which have surrounded him since the age of 12 when he moved to Jamacia. Being a massive part of his culture he was heavily influenced by Sanchez and Josey Wales.

In Mugun’s newest single ‘Old Testament’ he spits real street rap over eerie synths and nocturnal drum production ruthlessly talking about his daily life in rapid delivery. We can tell immediately that he’s no stranger to the events he raps about as he’s “been on the block since early”.

Demonstrating his Jamaican culture the hook of the track is melodic and defiantly creates a counterbalance to the content of the lyrics because of the DIY, dancehall-inspired feel.

Speaking on the record, Mugun gave more insight into the track stating: “I recorded ‘Old Testament ‘during a period when the world was feeling highly unsettled, he explained.

“Everyone and everything was restless and uncertain and the feeling I got from it was reminiscent of how I would feel when my Nan would recite me a chapter from the first half of the Old Book. The record was born from that feeling and from how I imagined it would be during the time of the Old Testament and ultimately, it’s something I needed to capture in a song.
