CKay Explores His Roots On Latest Single 'EGWU EJI’

A year on from his debut album Sad Romance CKay shares his latest single ‘EGWU EJI’, a deeply personal and intimate offering that taps into the elements of Afrobeats and Amapiano as well as his Igbo heritage.

Meaning something heavy or impressive in Igbo, ‘EGWU EJI’ is a way to reach a wider audience, without alienation his original fan base

In awe of his love interest, he adorns her with sweet and smooth vocals that hold warmth as he conveys his transparent affection. He sings, “Love at first sight/Tales by moonlight/ We couldn’t deny I saw you, you saw me/ full of desire /Frying pan to fire.”

Produced by CKay’s longtime collaborators Jay Synth and BMH, The Hypnotic soundscape is centred around the Oja flute, an instrument traditionally used in the Igbo tribe of Nigeria for significant gatherings and backed by light percussion drums.

The accompanying official music video, set in the village explores the natural beauty and strength of African women under the stars in an array of colours.

It's a feel-good club record that draws heavy inspiration from traditional Igbo dance music,” CKay shares. “It’s a song about meeting a woman at the club and the passion that ensues. The instrumental produced by Jay Synth and BMH spoke to me very strongly.”
