BUJU Gets Personal in Long-Awaited Debut EP “Sorry I’m Late”

Rising Nigerian virtuoso BUJU has released his highly anticipated debut project, the 7-track EP Sorry I’m Late. The name of the EP being a nod to a voice-note he received from an eager fan expressing their disappointment with his lack of new music, the long wait was indeed worthwhile. A breath of fresh air amidst the many hip-hop and R&B fusion projects put out this year, Sorry I’m Late takes a more traditional approach to modern Nigerian music, with sweet percussions and simple rhythms bringing back the old-school.

Spanning a short and sweet length of just under 20 minutes, the EP boasts production from the likes of Timi Jay, Denzi and Steph among many others. BUJU celebrates his artistic freedom after leaving a toxic situation with a label; now liberated and able to create and release music on his own terms, his introspective, witty lyrics that oscillate between English and Yoruba cover themes of resilience, love and self-worth.

Each track peels back a layer of who BUJU is as a person, starting with the first track, the aptly named Daniel Benson. The project smoothly transitions from self-asserting to romantic and velvety with Something Sweet, with the final track being the deeply personal and affirmational I Do.

23-year-old BUJU first broke into the music scene with his 2018 single A Day in Lagos, following it up with hits Spiritual and L’enu. The latter turned the head of African giant Burna Boy, who offered BUJU his praises with a remix of the song. 2021’s Feeling, alongside rapper LADIPOE, became the first song in Nigeria to go No.1 on Youtube without having an accompanying music video, a huge feat for the newcomer.

BUJU then collaborated with Wizkid for the new track Mood featured on the Made in Lagos deluxe edition; securely placing him on the highly coveted Nigerian music map.

With Sorry I’m Late being only the appetizer into BUJU’s undeniable talent, who knows where his music will take us next.
