The word demure is one that has steadily been doing the rounds on TikTok, but it perfectly encapsulates British-Guinean singer-songwriter Jamilah Barry's newest single ’The Love Is Gone’.
A subtle low simmering alternate R&B offering that experiments with South American elements like rumba and bossa nova, with velvet smoothness Jamilah voices her discontent to gain closure rather than leaving things unsaid as she nears the breakdown of her relationship.
Tender and raw, we slip into Jamilah’s tale of heartache and melancholy as she accepts that people outgrow each other in situations through no fault of their own.
Produced by Rømme and Oddbox, ‘The Love Is Gone’ also enlists producer and multi-instrumentalist Marco Bernadis’ cutting saxophone accompaniment.
Speaking on the track, Jamilah said “I had so much fun writing this. Rømme and I couldn’t stop ourselves when it came to adding and layering the BVs and harmonies. There were literally HUNDREDS of vocal tracks (big up Engine Earz on the mix, haha). It’s giving cutesy. It’s giving demure and I can’t wait to hear people sing along to it”.
