There’s a certain inevitability to Birkenstock’s expansion beyond sandals.
The brand, long established as a staple of the fashion insider uniform, has built its reputation on consistency. Function-first, but never utilitarian. Orthopedic, but never ugly. The world bends to trends.
Birkenstock does not.
And now, for SS25, Birkenstock expands beyond sandals with its latest collection designed for a more urban, trans-seasonal mode of dressing.
The offering is cohesive: earthy taupe palettes, matte suede, subtle workwear influences; if sandals were once a radical statement (freeing the foot from unnecessary constraints), these new models lean into control. Walking as nature always intended, but just with better traction.
The Highwood Low Lace and Utti focus on deep arch support and structured yet flexible uppers and the Pasadena, a reworking of the classic hand stitched moc-toe, softens over time. The Bend Decon sneaker is designed for urban ease: lightweight, foot hugging; a rejection of the overbuilt maximalist runners that have dominated recent years. Every silhouette in this collection is stripped back, precise in function without tipping into clinical.
Birkenstock trades in timelessness, but even the most enduring brands must evolve.
The campaign still speaks its language of biomechanics, foot alignment, and natural movement, but the subtext is clear: this release is about versatility. A practical, strategic expansion into the world of closed-toe footwear. The ubiquity of the sandal meant the next step had to be something different.
This is just Birkenstock doubling down on what it has always done best; and for the modern wearer, moving through the city or just looking for a shoe that doesn’t demand a 'breaking-in' period, this collection just works.
It’s still Birkenstock.
Only this time, with laces.
