If past collections are anything to go by, Supriya Lele’s capacity to manipulate classic connotations of sensuality is no surprise to anyone.
Words by Coraly Langué
Fluent in Nineties and Noughties-inflected accents, this season sees a rock-infused presentation of femininity down the runway. For AW 22, Lele introduces a free-spirited biker girl into her world. Timely and purposeful, this introduction mirrors the designer's move toward a more ‘grown-up’ atmosphere, echoed in this season’s intriguing use of deep earthy tones and contrasting textures. This season’s colour work sees Lele conjure a cleverly bold palette; balancing dark, inky hues with confident bursts of unadulterated colour, this season’s tonal composition is a lesson on sophistication and youth.
Similarly, the designer offers a new take on proportion, infusing streamlined silhouettes with quintessentially sportswear-inspired detailing. Boasting elevated necklines with athletic raglan sleeve details, Supriya’s pieces exude an elegant energy as well as youthful athleticism.
Perhaps unsurprisingly, this season’s inspiration comes from Supriya’s own teenage wardrobe. Drawing on the vintage ski jackets she wore herself in her teens, the collection is peppered with the dynamic silhouettes of the Nineties, transformed to Lele’s contemporary vision. The marshmallow pink cropped bomber jacket perfectly encapsulates this adolescent playfulness but is instantly elevated when paired with a Kingfisher blue pant, allowing Supriya’s controlled eclecticism to define itself within the toughness of the collection.
As always, Supriya’s meticulous adaptation of sheer fabrics composes the baseline for this collection. Toying with varying degrees of transparency, the designer utilises sheerness and layering to reveal coquettish underwear details in a cool celebration of the body and the sensuality that ensues. For AW22, Supriya Lele masterfully appropriates sex appeal and turns it into a statement of edge, strength, and crafted confidence.
