A24’s ‘Zola’ Brings A Viral Twitter Thread To Life - Trailer

“Y’all wanna hear a story about why me & this bitch here fell out????? It’s kind of long but full of suspense”

It’s not often that a viral thread on Twitter is picked up by a movie director and turned into a full-fledged film. After reading the 148-tweet thread (which currently has over six million views on Imgur) from start to finish, it’s clear that the story of Aziah 'Zola' Wells (@_zolarmoon), a 20-year-old waitress and exotic dancer at the time, has all the makings of a successful comedy-drama.

Directed by Afro-Panamanian writer Janicza Bravo, co-written by Bravo and Jeremy O Harris and distributed by A24, Zola follows Aziah’s (Taylour Paige) road trip from Detroit to Florida with Stefani (Riley Keough); a fellow dancer she had met on the night prior. Joining them on the trip is Stefani's hopeless boyfriend Derrek (Nicholas Braun), and a suspicious pimp (Colman Domingo) with no name. Though Zola makes $800 from the Florida gig, their spontaneous trip soon takes a turn for the worst - with every possible scenario ranging from sex trafficking to murder.

Packed with suspense, and numerous twists and turns, the thrilling saga has been compared to A24's Spring Breakers, and 2019 film Hustlers.

Zola premiered at Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, though its release date was pushed back as a result of COVID-19. The highly-anticipated film will finally be released on the big screen this summer, though its UK release date is yet to be announced.
