10 Things We Love About Vigro Deep

Ahead of his explosive headline DJ set at Piano People in the Park located in South London’s Southwark Park this Friday, we sat down with one of South Africa’s hottest DJs, Vigro Deep, discussing everything from his dynamic origin story to the meaning behind his innovative name.

Vigro Deep is one of the hottest DJs right now to have entered the amapiano space, collaborating with the likes of Focalistic, Kabza De Small, DJ Maphorisa, Reekado Banks and so many more, the prouder/DJ is one of the youngest selectors to take the scene by storm, as he constantly shuts down whichever space he is in, as he continues to amplify the sounds of amapiano and African electronic dance music.

Here’s 10 things we love about Vigro Deep…

We love your stage name Vigro Deep, what was the inspiration behind it?

Vigro Deep: My stage name, Vigro Deep, combines my star sign, Virgo, and the deep house sound that inspired me early in my career. I wanted a name that reflects who I am and the music I create, which is deeply rooted in emotion and rhythm.

We love that you’ve been pursuing music since you were 17 years old, is this something you always wanted to do?

Vigro Deep: Music has always been a part of my life, but I initially wanted to be a rapper. It wasn’t until I started experimenting with Fruity Loops and saw the impact Amapiano was having in my school that I decided to fully dive into it. Watching my dad, who was a deep house producer, also played a big role in steering me toward a music career.

We love the fact that you are among some of the biggest names in Amapiano to headline Piano People in the park, how does that make you feel?

Vigro Deep: It’s an incredible feeling to be recognized alongside some of the giants in the genre. It’s a sign that all the hard work and dedication are paying off. I’m honoured and excited to bring my sound to such a prestigious event and share the stage with other talented artists.

We love that you always bring the energy and vibes to your sets, what can we expect at Piano People in the Park? Any special guests or exclusive mixes?

Vigro Deep: Expect a lot of energy, some new mixes, and a few surprises! I’m always looking to push the boundaries of what people expect, so I’ll be bringing some exclusive tracks that blend Amapiano with another genre. As for special guests, not this time round but something I would do in the future if I can, there will definitely be some exciting collaborations and I'm testing out some new sounds. You will hear some stuff that I dropped from my new EP with Jazziq Grass is Greener. We went crazy on that one.

We love how you consistently collaborate with Focalistic, is it easier to team up when you already have a friendship?

Vigro Deep: Absolutely. Focalistic and I have a great chemistry that comes from knowing each other well. It makes the creative process smoother because we’re on the same wavelength. We can experiment and push each other to create something unique every time.

We love how you’re always booked and busy, no matter which country you’re in. Where in the world has been your favourite place to play?

Vigro Deep: That’s a tough one because every place has its own vibe. But I’d say London has been one of my favourites. The crowd there really understands the energy of Amapiano, and the reception has been amazing. Paris also holds a special place for me because it was there that I experienced my first techno party, which really influenced my sound. Oh and Portugal's afronation was crazy too, the energy was crazy

We love how you’ve continued to amplify the sound of Amapiano over the years, if you weren’t playing Amapiano, what other genre would it be?

Vigro Deep: If I weren’t playing Amapiano, I’d probably be deep into electro-house or even something like afro-tech. I’m always experimenting with different sounds and genres, so it’s hard to pin down just one. Music is about exploration, and I’m always looking for new ways to express myself. Also, experiment with hip hop, that's what I started with and I used to rap!

We love Vigro, however, it’s so hard to pick a favourite track, what would you say is your favourite track that you’ve been a part of?

Vigro Deep: That’s like choosing between your kids! ( I don’t have any but you get my point) But if I had to pick, “Ke Star” with Focalistic stands out. It changed a lot for both of us and put Amapiano on the global map. Another one would be “Black Power,” which was the first track that really got my name out there.

We love live music and can’t wait to see you perform at Piano People in the Park, which artists are you looking forward to seeing?

Vigro Deep: All of them, but we are here for the giants Scorpion Kings you can never get tired of seeing them play. Kabza and I have been working as well so I'm sure we will hear some new stuff there or from me.

We love how consistent you are - What does the future hold for you?

Vigro Deep: The future is all about growth and evolution. I want to continue pushing the boundaries of Amapiano, blending it with other genres, and bringing it to new audiences worldwide. I’m also working on some projects that mix different sounds, and I’m excited to see where that takes me. The goal is to keep making music that resonates with people, no matter where they’re from.
